The last couple of years, I put together a band for the annual company holiday party at work and I played at the CVUUF Christmas Eve services. I enjoy thinking up new ways of interpreting the classic holiday songs that fill our airspace wherever you go in December. For last year’s CVUUF Christmas Eve service, I played The Little Drummer Boy using my guitar as a percussive instrument – slapping the strings instead of strumming them. It made perfect sense to me since it’s about a kid playing his drum. I wanted to capture that approach and recorded the song after the holidays. That’s when I got the idea that it would be cool to do a holiday CD with members of our CVUUF congregation, and to sell it to raise funds for our church. I challenged myself to come up with new arrangements that would also reflect the eclectic nature of our members. This became a labor of love which I pursued throughout the year. While it was extremely rewarding, it hasn’t been without its challenges and came at a price. Many thanks go to my family, who have supported me while I spent family time cooped up in my studio recording just one more take or working on string arrangements at 2 in the morning. And lots of thanks go to everyone who participated at a time when the beach was a more likely destination than my little studio, which incidentally doubled as a sauna during that heat wave we had. We are so blessed to have such great talent all in one place. So finally, here’s our eclectic holiday album…are you listening?
